Understand Dealer Pricing Games

The best way to protect yourself during your car buying experience is to arm yourself with knowledge.

Understanding dealer pricing games is fundamental in getting your best deal!

There are four main components to a vehicle purchase:

  • The price of the Vehicle
  • The price of Financing
  • The price of aftermarket products – Ex: warranties
  • The value of your trade-in

In order to get a “good deal”, in most cases, you will need to understand all of the above. If you negotiate well on the price of the vehicle, they may inflate the financing or play with the value of your trade in. If you want a high trade in value, they are likely to be less inclined to decrease the price of the vehicle. If you are great at negotiating all of the above, they may start to throw in “financing set up charges” or increase the price of a warranty.

Don’t get overwhelmed!
  • Deal with a dealer that has the pricing online, in print and at the dealership, all the same.
  • Deal with a dealer where the contract is a “Conditional Sales Agreement” generated by the bank where you’re loan is financed.  It is illegal to manipulate the financing rate on these documents.
  • Deal with a dealer that shows you you’re cost online, on the website that sells the product or with a dealer that can show you a professionally pre-printed “Menu of Items” that are being offered.
  • Deal with a dealership that will give you a Trade-in Appraisal sheet BEFORE you negotiate the pricing
Here are some additional items to be aware of:

Buying Online
  • There may be additional costs associated with this transaction.
  • There may be hidden fees.
  • Who covers the cost of transportation?
  • What you see is not necessarily what you get.
  • Make sure there is a money back guarantee.
  • Who covers the cost of transportation if you cancel the purchase?
  • Who covers the cost of reconditioning if you cancel the purchase?
  • Make sure the cost online is also the same cost once you enter the showroom.
  • Some dealers may offer No Haggle Pricing until you get to the dealership.
  • May increase the fees or costs in the other components in the car buying experience. Ex: financing fees, buyers’ fees, warranty registration fees etc…
  • Some of the options listed online are not actually the options available on the vehicle once the vehicle shows up.

Vehicle Pricing as compared to provincial market

Beware of a vehicle in the marketplace that is substantially less expensive than other with similar features, year and mileage. If you’re thinking it’s too good to be true, it’s because it is!

  • Ask if the vehicle has ever been “Accidented”, had “Structural Repairs”, “Frame Damaged”, “Flooded” or “Rebuilt”.
  • Demand the “RIGHT” Vehicle History Report.
    • For Canadian accident history (Insurance Claims, Branding or Previous Theft) – Use CarProof
    • For general Canadian vehicle information (Owner history, Mileage, Branding, Theft) – Use UCDA’s AutoCheck
    • For US Accident History (US accident , Owner history, Mileage and Branding)– Use CarFax

One of the most played games in the industry is the use of one of these history reports but not the other. Why one and not the other? In short, because they all have strengths in different areas or because one of the history reports may show an issue that another one doesn’t. See list above.
